Vincent R. England

Vincent Ray England, age 92, of Carney’s Point, NJ, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 4, 2018. Born on July 3, 1925 in Tionesta, PA he was the son of the late Arthur and Ethel (Walter) England.

As a young teen Vince left school to help support his family following the untimely death of his father. At age 18 he enlisted and proudly served his country as a United States Marine in the South Pacific Theater during WW II, including the Battle of Saipan, and in Japan (1943-1946). He achieved marksman status while in the Marines. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Tionesta where he met his wife of 71 years, Doris (Bisker) England. They lived in East Hickory, PA until moving to Carney’s Point in 1953 with their growing family.

Vince was a self-taught, hardworking man with many skills. He held various jobs during his working life including patrolman on the Walt Whitman Bridge, operator at DuPont Chambers Works, and long haul truck driver. A farm boy at heart, he especially enjoyed early jobs that involved working with horses and at Glenside Dairy.

Vince was an active church member most of his adult life, most recently attending Bethel Bible Baptist Church in Carney’s Point. Most would describe him as friendly, good-natured, and easy to talk to. He was generous and went out of his way to help others. As a young adult he played on various community baseball teams and was known for his exceptional ability as a hitter, having never struck out. His was also an excellent roller skater in his prime. He was a loving father who enjoyed all of his children. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his ultimate joy. He looked forward to their summer visits to Tionesta, and, along with his wife, taught several of them to ski, which was a favorite past time of his. Vince loved his vegetable garden and, in true character, gave much of his produce away. He enjoyed old time country and gospel music. He was everyone’s friend.

In addition to his wife, Doris, he is survived by his children: Melanie Poli of Carney’s Point; Diane England of Lancaster, PA; Walter “Bubby” England (Beverly) of Carney’s Point; Arthur England (Linda) of Carney’s Point; Jeffrey England (Tana) of Carney’s Point; Autumn Luciani (Jim) of Woodbury, NJ; Amy Ricketts (Brian) of Pennsville, NJ; Cynthia England (Randal) of Pilesgrove, NJ; and Frederick England (April) of Carney’s Point; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister Imogene Kiffer of Endeavor, PA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Walter England, and sisters, LaDonna Hoffman and Guila Atkin.

The funeral service, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 7th at Bethel Bible Baptist Church, 20 S. Elmwood Ave., Carney’s Point, NJ. Friends may visit family from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church. Interment will take place at Church Hill Cemetery, East Hickory, PA, on Saturday, March 10th at 1:00 PM.  Local services are under the direction of the Norman J. Wimer Funeral Home of Tionesta.
