Dorothy I. (Osten) McWilliams, age 91, of Tionesta, PA, died peacefully at her home in Tionesta on Friday, August 16, 2019. She was born July 24, 1928 in Tionesta, daughter of the late Fred E. and Mabel (Hunter) Osten. On April 24, 1948 in Ohio, she married Maurice A. McWilliams, who preceded her in death on December 11, 2009.
After graduating from Tionesta High School in 1946, Dorothy worked for a brief time at Struthers Wells in Warren, PA, prior to her marriage. After marriage she worked from her home decorating cakes for all occasions – including wedding cakes, which she delivered from Erie to Pittsburgh. This launched her career in food service that lasted over 50 years. Employment outside the home began at the Totem Pole restaurant where she developed her management skills. Breaking ground for other women to follow, she became an entrepreneur, which was quite unique in the 1960s. Her first venture was as a partner in the Dairy Restaurant; then owner and operator of the Sky Jet Restaurant when the Piper Cub airplane was on the roof. Her last business was Country Kitchen Catering that included a Bed & Breakfast.
Dorothy was a member of the Tionesta Christian Missionary Alliance Church. Her faith was very important to her and she enjoyed using her skills in His service. She volunteered for many years at the Wolfe’s Corners Fair. Her hobbies included crocheting afghans and doilies, gardening and she especially enjoyed her house plants and flower gardens.
Surviving are her children: Dianne L. Kaufman of Belpre, Ohio, Ronald A. McWilliams and his wife Yolanda of Tionesta and Betty Jo McWilliams of Tionesta; along with her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Robert E. Osten and his wife Bernice, of Tionesta; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Norman J. Wimer Funeral Home of Tionesta on Friday, August 23 from 2-4 and 6-8. Viewing will continue on Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 10am – 11am at the Tionesta CMA Church, 1734 Rt 36, Tionesta, PA, prior to the funeral at 11 am with Rev. James R. Evilsizor, retired pastor, and Rev. Jerry Ester, pastor of the Tionesta CMA Church, co-officiating. Burial will be at Wolfe’s Corners Cemetery, Washington Twp., Clarion County, PA.
Bernice Osten, Linda Byers, Stephanie Burkett and Kay Mealy were Dorothy’s care givers. Their excellent service and loving compassion were greatly appreciated, as was the fine care provided by her physician, James M. Zehner.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Missionary Fund of the Tionesta CMA Church, PO Box 409, Tionesta, PA 16353.
