Leo always brought a smile. His house on Kiffer Hill was always filled with vehicles and people, the hub of everyones activities. Always joking trying to get a laugh. He taught us both a lot about the hills. I went out this weekend and found some trailing arbutus and I remember him showing me how to find it and how it was used for perfume. He just knew everything about the woods and hunting..Always a flirt he made me feel special and welcome on the hill. We loved Leo and VJ and mourn the great loss. We were so honored to call him and all of you our freinds. Godspeed Leo.

A wonderful beacon at top of the hill has passed away. He will be greatly missed by me and my family. We always made the effort to visit Uncle Leo every time we made the trip to PA. His enthusiasm for Life is and was a great inspiration to me . RIP Uncle Leo we loved you. Give Aunt VJ a hug for me, tell her we love and miss her too!

LEO BEANE

The Civilian Conservation Corps community of advocates, historians, family, and CCC boys is saddened to lose our CCC boy, Leo. Not only did Leo serve his country as a CCC tree planter at the ANF-1 camp at Duhring, but he went on to serve his country again in the US Army Air Corps in World War II. Leo was a patriotic man, a good man, and a man that will long be remembered by his CCC friends.

I met Leo for the first time on August 11, 2011, and he has left his footprint on my heart! He was my favorite CCC boy and, in my mind, I called him “Tall, Lean, Leo Beane”! I’ll always remember the twinkle in his eye, his infectious grin, and the way he “cocked” his ball cap on his head. His excellent memory, quick wit, and sense of humor made every conversation memorable!

Seeing Leo at the CCC reunions in August was a special day! I remember fondly the day he told me how he planted CCC trees at ANF-1. With voice and hand gestures, he walked me through the process of tree planting with great detail. In the middle of his demonstration, he said, “If you could get me a mattock, I’ll show you how.” No mattock was available, but I was astounded to think a man of 90 plus years was still able to swing a mattock! We also had conversations about his new truck, how much wood he was cutting, and in general, his simple, but good life near Tionesta.

There is no doubt in my mind that Leo Beane packed a lot of living into 96 years!! The trees Leo planted still stand tall in the Allegheny National Forest! His CCC legacy will live on for generations to come!

Timothy 2:7 “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” Rest in peace, CCC boy!
